Born in 1979, Ahmed Mater, a physician who turned to art, has become a pivotal cultural figure in documenting and analyzing the realities of contemporary Saudi Arabia. Raised in Abha, a city near Yemen, Mater experienced firsthand the nation's era of significant political, economic, and social transformations. His artwork delves deeply into the complexities of Saudi society and its changing identity against the backdrop of global changes. Through his practice, Mater explores collective memories to reveal and document unofficial histories.

His art captures the ongoing struggle between tradition and progress, heritage and globalization, spirituality and modernity. Utilizing photography, film, sculpture, and performance art, the multidisciplinary artist adeptly maps, records, and interprets these profound shifts, exploring their psychological impacts on individuals, communities, and the broader global consciousness.

Mater’s work has been displayed in solo shows in prestigious venues like the Smithsonian Institution's Arthur M. Sackler Gallery and the Brooklyn Museum. He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions worldwide, showcasing his work in renowned institutions such as the British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Guggenheim.
